The St. Regis Kanai: A Crown Jewel of Riviera Maya Luxury

The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya opened in March 2023, and in the years since it has gathered the kind of recognition that comes from inspectors rather than from press releases. It sits inside Kanai, a 680-acre enclave in the municipality of Solidaridad, just outside Playa del Carmen, where the hotels take up roughly a tenth of the land and the rest is left as mangrove and jungle. Cancún International Airport is about 35 minutes away by car.

Awards on the Record

Plenty of superlatives get attached to a resort like this one. These are the distinctions it actually holds, all of them from bodies that inspect rather than poll:

  • AAA Five Diamond. The resort has held the designation since 2024 and appears on AAA’s 2026 Five Diamond hotel list, the top tier of a program that sends inspectors in person and reviews its ratings every year.
  • Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star. Forbes rates the resort Four-Star, and gives The St. Regis Spa Kanai a Four-Star rating of its own, both awarded after anonymous stays scored against hundreds of service criteria.
  • One MICHELIN Key. The MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection in Mexico gives the resort one Key, the distinction it keeps for hotels worth the trip in their own right.

A Luxury Destination for the Discerning Traveler

Awards aside, what you notice on the ground is how the place runs. St. Regis butler service comes with every room, which in practice means unpacking, pressing and a coffee at the hour you asked for, with no phone call involved. The St. Regis Spa Kanai builds its menu around Maya-inspired rituals and a partnership with Sothys Paris.

Dining is spread across five restaurants. Toro, on the beach, is directed by chef Richard Sandoval and reads Mexican and Latin American cooking through a contemporary lens. Chaya handles the Italian side, from hand-rolled pasta to wood-fired plates. Riviera is the seafood room, drawing on both of Mexico’s coasts. The St. Regis Bar occupies the top floor and builds its cocktails around the constellations, which is not a decorative choice.

Architecture Drawn from the Pleiades

The building itself is why a good number of people book. Edmonds International laid the resort out as circular volumes that, seen from the air, trace the Pleiades, the star cluster the Maya followed and that rises over this coast in December; the interiors are the work of Chapi Chapo Design. The structures stand on piles above a red mangrove forest and are joined by elevated walkways, so the wetland underneath keeps functioning while guests move above it.

That is also the resort’s strongest environmental argument. Rather than clearing the mangrove, the project was built over it, and the wider Kanai development leaves close to 90 percent of its land unbuilt. When the resort opened, the design press covered the approach at length.

What Comes Next

Ratings get reviewed every year, so the list above will move. The formula is less likely to: 124 rooms, suites and residences on a stretch of coast used to properties ten times that size, and a mangrove that was left standing.
