Tulum
The only Maya city built facing the sea.
Tulum is an archaeological site on a cliff, a road of hotels between jungle and beach, and a way of travelling that half the world has copied.
The destination falls into three zones: the archaeological site, the town and the beach road. Around them, cenotes, lagoons, the Sian Ka'an reserve and a kitchen that mixes the local with whatever everyone brought along.

The archaeological site
Limestone above the Caribbean Sea
Tulum was a port and a walled city, and it is the only Maya archaeological site built on the shore. Worth arriving right at opening time.

Cenotes
The other sea, underground
Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote, Calavera: around Tulum lies one of the largest networks of underground rivers on the planet. To them add lagoons such as Kaan Luum, and snorkelling on the reef just offshore.

The beach
Jungle, sand and very few straight lines
Ten miles of white sand run down to the Sian Ka'an reserve. The coast road crosses them between boutique hotels, glamping, beach clubs and restaurants with their feet in the sand.
