Beaches
The beaches in Isla Cozumel are of fine white sand or limestone islets, of turquoise waters that take everyone's breath away.
The beaches that stretch from Punta Norte to Punta Sur have low tides. This side of the island is where most of the reefs are located, which are the habitat of a wide variety of marine life, which is ideal for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
The open waters are located on the eastern side of the island. This is where the current and the tides tend to be intense, which is perfect for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Along Cozumel you will find several beach clubs where you can spend the day enjoying the sun and the ocean, with a refreshing drink in hand and eating delicious food. Many of these beach clubs feature swimming pools, bars, water slides, floating parks, beachfront spas, beach volleyball and soccer courts, where you can do fun activities, such as horseback riding, ATVing, parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing, among others.
Here are some of the best beaches in Cozumel:
North Side
Isla de la Pasión
A gorgeous secluded island with unspoiled beaches that is one-kilometer long. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, Isla de la Pasión was a sacred place for the Mayans who came into the island to worship the goddess Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, love and fertility.
Playa Azul
It offers spectacular beach views, in a family atmosphere where you can practice different water sports.
West Side
Dzul Ha
This popular beach of warm waters is a great place to watch the sunsets. Located so close to Dzul Ha reef, that you don’t even need a boat to get there, just swim a few meters away from the shore to admire the wide variety of fish and marine life that live there.
Playa Corona
Snorkeling is really popular on this beach due to the cays that hide in its waters. Its coast stretches right next to the southern section of the Chankanaab reef, a spot that is teeming with marine life and one of the best places in the island to watch the sunsets.
Sky Reef
This beach is also popular for snorkeling, as it has several coral reef formations, some of which are endangered, such as the elkhorn coral.
Playa San Francisco
A beautiful white sandy beach with turquoise waters. This is one of the most visited beaches of the island. Some of the activities you can do here include parasailing, jet skiing and more. An ideal place for enjoying the Caribbean sun and refreshing drinks.
Nachi Cocom
Perfect for families, couples and friends who just want to relax and stay away from the crowds.
Playa Palancar
One of the locals and tourists favorite beaches, as it is the closest spot to El Cielo (located 15 minutes). Besides snorkeling, here you can perform a wide variety of water activities, such as kayaking or parasailing.
El Cielo
If you are vacationing in Cozumel and you don’t visit El Cielo, it’s like you didn’t come! This place is a sandbank which is considered a sanctuary of starfish. Its bright turquoise waters make it look like a true paradise. In order to get to El Cielo you need to book a tour, as the access is only by boat. We invite you to be a responsible traveler and take care of the starfish, do not disturb them or don't take them out of the water.
Punta Sur
The beaches of this ecological park – which is part of the Nature Reserve – surround the Colombia lagoon. Here you can do all kinds of water activities, from snorkeling to catamaran tours.
Chunchakaab
Located on the southwestern tip of Cozumel within Punta Sur Park, which is the largest ecological reserve on the island. To access this beach you must walk through a short dirt road that's close to the Celarain Lighthouse. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Cozumel, with soft white sand and crystal clear waters. The best thing about this beach is that it features several exotic birds and coral formations.
East Side
Playa Bonita
It is a stunning place, with waters of different shades of blue. Playa Bonita stands out for having strong winds and currents, which makes it the perfect place for practicing extreme sports such as surf, kitesurf and windsurf. It is located on the east side of the island, right off the cycle-path.
Playa San Martín
A 3-mile-long unspoiled beach. Its crystal clear waters are very appealing for swimming, but you need to be cautious due to the strong currents prevailing in the sea.
Chen Río
One of the best beaches located on the eastern side. Named after the river that once flowed through the sea and formed this beach and its mangroves. Chen Río beach features lush vegetation and rocky blocks that form a huge natural pool separate and safe from the sea currents. There are restaurants here that offer a wide variety of seafood and drinks for all tastes.
Punta Morena
It is one of the few unspoiled beaches of Cozumel and is especially popular with younger people because it is considered the best surfing spot on the island.
Playa Rastas
One of the locals favorite beaches that come here to relax during their spare time or days off. The imposing view of the open waters makes it the perfect place to walk on the beach, watch the sunsets over the ocean or just relax after a hectic day.
