In Maya Ka’an, Maya culture is not a chapter of the past. It is a living reality, kept alive by communities that have called this region home for centuries and still practice many of the traditions that shape who they are. For travelers, visiting the Maya communities of Maya Ka’an is a chance to see that way of life up close: to learn their customs and take part in activities rooted in a deep respect for nature and traditional knowledge.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto, often called the cultural heart of the region, is the natural place to start. The town was the capital of the Maya who rose up during the Caste War (1847 to 1901), and that history is still present in places like the Sanctuary of the Talking Cross. Keep in mind that the sanctuary is a place of worship, not a tourist attraction: ask the guardian’s permission before entering, take off your shoes and leave the camera in your bag. Beyond the town, the communities offer experiences such as traditional medicine workshops, where local guides explain what each medicinal plant is used for, or a visit to see how a huipil, the traditional garment, is made. Food is central to daily life here too, with dishes like tamales de frijol espelón or relleno negro prepared from recipes handed down for generations. A visit to these communities is a journey through history, but also a chance to share, for a while, a way of life in harmony with nature.
