Maya Ka'an

Where tourism is run by the Maya communities.

Maya Ka'an is the inland side of Quintana Roo, two hours south of Cancun and next to Tulum: jungle, lagoons, wetlands and the Maya towns that care for them.

Here visits are led by local cooperatives, and the Sian Ka'an reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sets the limits.

Sian Ka'an

Canals through the mangroves

The canals of Sian Ka'an were cut by the Maya for trade, and today they are travelled by boat and by float, carried by the current between mangrove walls. The reserve protects jungle, wetland and reef, and shelters jaguars, crocodiles, sea turtles and more than three hundred bird species.

Living history

Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the Talking Cross

The heart of the region was the Maya refuge during the Caste War. The Sanctuary of the Talking Cross, the symbol of that resistance, still stands here, along with the Casa de la Cultura and its account of the people's history and art.

Communities

The trip is told by the people who live it

In Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Muyil, Chunhuhub and Senor, Maya cooperatives host and guide. On their tables is the milpa: espelon bean tamalitos and relleno negro, cooked the way they are cooked at home.
