Chetumal
Chetumal, the heart of the Maya world.
Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo and looks out over a calm bay that a colony of manatees calls home. It has markets, seafood kitchens and a waterfront that fills up at sunset.
It is also the door to the deep south: the Museum of Maya Culture, archaeological sites in the jungle and rivers that run to the border with Belize.

The bay
Twelve miles of waterfront
Chetumal Bay is shallow and calm, and it shelters a colony of manatees. You can paddle it by kayak or board, and the malecon runs its full length: the best place in the south to watch the sun go down.

Maya heritage
Kohunlich and the masks of the sun god
An hour or two from the city, Kohunlich, Dzibanché, Kinichná and Oxtankah keep their temples, acropolises and ceremonial plazas among the jungle.

Museum of Maya Culture
The whole story, in a single visit
Chetumal's museum lays out Maya cosmology, writing and daily life with a design built for understanding, not just for looking.

Jungle and rivers
The doorway to the deep south
From Chetumal you reach Laguna Milagros, the cenotes of the Rio Hondo and the road to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about three hours away, already in Campeche.
