The sea
Shallow water and sand without footprints
The sandbar off Costa Mujeres keeps the water low and clear for hundreds of yards: you swim without surf and snorkel a few steps out. On the Chacmuchuch lagoon to the north, steady wind has made it a kitesurfing spot.

Sea to table
The day's catch, cooked plainly
Octopus, conch, fish a la talla: the kitchen on this coast comes from the market and the grill, with recipes that have been in the region for generations.

The hotels
Spas, fine dining and a Greg Norman course
The coast holds large-format hotels with spas, chef-led restaurants and water parks, for families and for adults. Beside them, the Playa Mujeres golf course, designed by Greg Norman, runs through lagoon, ocean and beach.

Around it
Contoy, Yum Balam, Isla Blanca and El Meco
Isla Contoy, a bird sanctuary, and the Yum Balam reserve are visited from here with local guides and a limited daily quota. To the north, Isla Blanca keeps quiet, pet-friendly beaches, and inland stands the El Meco archaeological site.
