IRONMAN Cozumel: A Top Fan Favorite for Athletes Worldwide

Cozumel, the island just off the Riviera Maya, has earned a place among the race destinations triathletes love most. IRONMAN Cozumel has been held every year since 2009, when it became the first full-distance IRONMAN in Mexico, and athletes keep coming back for the same reasons: clear water, a flat and fast course, and a whole island that turns out to cheer.

Award-winning in Latin America

The IRONMAN Athletes’ Choice Awards are built from the surveys athletes fill in after each race, so they say a lot about how a course is actually experienced. In both the 2024 and the 2025 awards, Cozumel finished second in the Latin America region in every full-distance category:

Awards are one thing; what athletes actually praise is more specific. The swim, along the reef at Chankanaab with the current in your favor, has a reputation for being fast. The bike leg is three laps of the road that circles the island, closed to traffic, with a stretch of open coast where the crosswind does the work of a hill. And the run takes three laps through downtown San Miguel and along the malecón, where the crowds line the sidewalks all the way to the finish at the City Hall plaza.

What makes IRONMAN Cozumel special?

Part of it is the setting: reef water clear enough to watch fish beneath you mid-swim, the sea beside you on the bike, and a finish line in the middle of a town that has adopted the race as its own. Part of it is practical. The island is easy to reach, by its own airport or by ferry from Playa del Carmen; the hotels and restaurants are used to hosting athletes and their families; and the days after the race look exactly like a recovery week should.

Race day comes every November

IRONMAN Cozumel is held in late November each year. The 2026 edition is on November 22, 2026, and it serves as the IRONMAN Latin American Championship. If the full distance is not on your calendar yet, the island also hosts IRONMAN 70.3 Cozumel every September (September 20, 2026). Entries for both tend to sell out, so register early and confirm dates and details on the official IRONMAN site.
