Playa del Carmen nightlife guide: the best spots on and around Fifth Avenue
Playa del Carmen is known for its white sand and clear water, but the town changes character after dark. Most of the action sits along Fifth Avenue (la Quinta Avenida) and on Calle 12, the side street where the big clubs stand almost door to door. 1. Coco Bongo: the show
Coco Bongo is the most famous name in Playa del Carmen’s nightlife, and it is less a nightclub than a stage show that happens to have a dance floor. Acrobats, live tributes to artists like Queen, giant screens and confetti keep coming until the early hours, and the ticket includes an open bar. You will find it on Calle 12 at Avenida 10, two blocks up from Fifth Avenue. Tickets and tables can be booked online.
2. Mandala: party with style
Mandala is the polished option: oriental-inspired decor, a dressed-up crowd and a sound system that runs from EDM and pop to the hits of the moment. It opens every night from 8:30 pm to 3 am, so it works for an early start as well as a late one. You will find it on Calle 12.
3. La Vaquita: a party without rules
If you would rather leave the dress code at home, La Vaquita is the fun, irreverent one. Cow-themed decor, oversized drink cups and a floor that bounces to reggaeton, hip hop and R&B. It opens Thursday to Sunday from 8:30 pm to 3 am, also on Calle 12. Sing, dance, make friends; nobody is judging.
4. Palazzo: glamour on Calle 12
Palazzo is the glamorous pick: lavish decor, VIP tables and a crowd that dresses for the occasion. The music mixes house, EDM and popular hits, and themed nights keep things changing. Doors open Thursday to Saturday from 10:30 pm, on Calle 12 between Fifth Avenue and Avenida 10.
5. Sunset with a view: the Hyatt Centric rooftop and C Grill
Not every night has to start on a dance floor. The rooftop of the Hyatt Centric Playa del Carmen Downtown House (the former Thompson Main House, on Calle 12) has an infinity pool with a swim-up bar and views over the rooftops to the sea; C Grill, the restaurant at the hotel’s Beach House on Calle 8, sits right on the sand. Either one is a good place for a cocktail at sunset before you walk over to the clubs a few blocks away.
6. Zenzi Beach Bar: live music with your feet in the sand
Zenzi, on Calle 10 where the street meets the beach, is the easygoing choice. There is live music every night (rock, blues, reggae, cumbia, and a full salsa band on Sundays), tables on the sand, and food and cocktails until late. Good for a slow evening, and just as good for dancing barefoot under the stars.
7. Santino: underground vibes
Santino is a small bar on Fifth Avenue between Calles 4 and 6 with a loyal following among people who prefer a good DJ to a floor show. It has a Latin floor and an electronic floor, with melodic house sets from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 pm. It is a smaller room than the big clubs, which makes it a good place to start the night.
8. Clandestino Rooftop: DJs above Fifth Avenue
Clandestino is a rooftop club at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Calle 10, with a terrace open to the sky, bottle service and international DJs playing house and tech house. It opens every night from 9 pm to 3 am.
9. Alux: cocktails inside a cave
For something completely different, Alux is a restaurant and bar built inside a natural cavern on Avenida Juárez, a few minutes by taxi from Fifth Avenue. Stalactites, stalagmites, low lighting and a quiet that feels a world away from Calle 12. It opens daily from 5:30 pm to 11 pm; go for dinner, or just for a cocktail among the rock.
