Ichkabal, the great Maya city near Bacalar
Ichkabal sits in the far south of Quintana Roo, a region of deep Maya roots and thick forest. For centuries this city lay hidden under the jungle canopy, and only in the last few decades has it started to give up its secrets. It lies about 40 kilometers west of Bacalar and 75 kilometers from Chetumal. Since it opened to the public in January 2025 it has become one of the most talked-about archaeological sites in the Mexican Caribbean, and researchers and travelers alike are finding their way there.
Its story goes back to around 400 BCE, in the Middle Preclassic, and people lived here until about 1500 CE. What archaeologists have found points to a political and cultural center of real weight. INAH researchers have described Ichkabal as the cradle of the Kaanu’l lineage, the Serpent dynasty that later ruled from nearby Dzibanché and then from Calakmul, and whose decisions shaped the Maya lowlands for centuries.
The first thing that strikes you is the scale. Several structures rise more than 40 meters, well above the treetops, and the largest of them has a base of roughly 200 meters. They stand around a central plaza some 300 meters across, a layout that speaks of careful urban planning and of the ceremonial and social life that once filled it.
The architecture also shows how the Maya built spaces that were practical and symbolic at the same time. Ichkabal is a window into the past, and every season of digging adds something new to what we know about the social, political and religious life of one of history’s most fascinating civilizations.
Getting there is simpler than it used to be. The Tren Maya stops at Bacalar and at Chetumal Aeropuerto, and a 23-kilometer access road built for the opening connects the site with the Bacalar station. The zone is open daily from 8:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and admission is free; check with INAH before you go, since conditions can change. The drive in from Bacalar or Chetumal, through low jungle, is part of the experience.
