The Best Beaches of Cozumel
Cozumel is a small island off the east coast of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatán Peninsula, and its beaches are the reason most people come. The sheltered west coast has calm, clear water and most of the beach clubs; the east coast is open sea, wind and surf. Between the two you can find a quiet cove, a reef a few strokes from the shore or a full day of water slides and open bar. Here are six beaches worth knowing before you choose.
1. Playa Palancar: calm water away from the crowds
Playa Palancar is often named among the most beautiful and calmest beaches in Cozumel. It sits on the southwest coast, far enough from town to stay quiet, and the beach club there keeps things simple: palapas, a restaurant and a stretch of white sand.
Its big advantage is the Palancar Reef, part of the Mesoamerican Reef, just offshore. Snorkeling and diving boats leave from here, so within minutes you can be over coral gardens with turtles, rays and schools of fish. If you would rather stay on land, the shallow water along the beach is easy for swimming and for floating the afternoon away.
2. Playa Chen Río: the local favorite on the east coast
On the east side of the island, facing the open Caribbean, Playa Chen Río is a favorite with locals and visitors alike. It feels nothing like the west coast. No reef breaks the swell here, the wind is constant and the waves roll in with real force, which is why this shore draws bodyboarders and surfers when there is swell.
What makes Chen Río special is a rim of rock that reaches into the sea and closes off a natural pool. Inside it the water is calm and shallow enough for families and children; outside the rocks the currents can be strong, so stay within the marked area. There are restaurants right on the beach for fresh fish and a cold beer, and no reason to hurry.
3. Playa Corona: snorkeling from the shore
If snorkeling is high on your list, put Playa Corona near the top. It is a short drive south of San Miguel, Cozumel’s main town, at km 10 of the Carretera Costera Sur, and it is small: a family-run beach club with a reef that starts a few meters from the shore. That makes it one of the easiest places on the island to snorkel without a boat, and a good first reef for beginners or anyone who prefers to stay close to land.
Expect tropical fish, sea fans and sponges in calm, clear water. It is a real taste of Cozumel’s marine life without going far out.
4. Playa Punta Sur: for nature lovers
Playa Punta Sur is for anyone who wants scenery and a bit of adventure with their beach day. It lies inside Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, a state ecological park (Parque Ecológico Estatal Laguna Colombia) of just over 1,000 hectares at the island’s southern tip, run by the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel. Mangroves, lagoons and reef surround the beach, and the sand and water are as clean as anywhere on the island.
Beyond the beach, you can climb the Celarain lighthouse for the view, take the boat ride across Laguna Colombia through the mangroves, or stop at the crocodile viewing area, home to a wild population of American crocodiles. Birds, sea turtles and iguanas are common sightings. That mix of beach and ecotourism is what makes Punta Sur a favorite.
5. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park: fun for the whole family
If you want a lively beach with plenty to do, Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is the answer. This beach park on the west coast, on the Carretera Costera Sur, has amenities and entertainment for every age: water slides, kayaks and paddle boats, snorkel gear and wave runner rentals, and an inflatable park floating in the sea.
The beach itself is soft sand and calm water, good for swimming and sunbathing. Children head straight for the inflatables and the kids’ pool. Day passes range from basic entry to all-inclusive food and open bar, so you decide how big a day you want.
6. Playa San Francisco: the beach club scene
Playa San Francisco is the pick for a beach club atmosphere. On the southwest coast, at km 14 of the Carretera Costera Sur, it is known for its clubs with loungers, umbrellas and food and drink brought to your chair.
It also has plenty of water toys: parasailing, jet skis and banana boat rides. It is a regular stop for cruise ship passengers, so expect company, but the calm, clear water and the upbeat mood make it a good place to meet people and see Cozumel’s social side.
